“Do we love God like Green Bay Packers fans love their team?”
Faith Church (Evangelical Presbyterian), Loveland Colorado.
Pastor Rob McClelland
The text was Matthew 22:34-40. Jesus is asked by a Pharisee, “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
What does that look like? On the most basic level, it means serving, listening, and caring enough to DO something. Love is an action. We DO love, not FEEL love.
On a deeper level, it means to give freely, with no strings attached. Do we love others enough to share our life with them?
As Christians, we are challenged to first love God with agape love, no conditions, freely, unconditionally, sacrificially. Then we are to love others with that agape love.
Our struggle to do that afflicts us all from time to time and in varying ways.
Imagine what transformations could take place if we practiced this same crazy devotion to God and our brothers and sisters!
